Many U.S. citizens and soldiers lost their lives in these horrendous attacks. On this single day, approximately 2,403 Americans died and another 1,178 people were wounded. The hospitals were full with all of the wounded, so citizens were helping doctors try to treat and care for them. People were making "Hospitals" in barracks and on the fields, even the tables in the schools were being functioned by doctors.  One of the sailors said, "Every table in the mess hall had a man on it." Also, hundreds of aircrafts and ships were damaged or destroyed in this event. The U.S. only had 71 aircrafts that were not touched out of about 400.

At 8:17 am Franklin D. Roosevelt received a call from Navy Frank Knox saying, "Mr. President, we've picked up a radio from Honolulu from the commander-in-chief of our forces there advising all our stations that an air raid attack was on and that it was 'no drill.' It looks as if the Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor."

On December 8, 1941 Roosevelt's declaration of war on Japan was approved by Congress. On December 11th, Germany and Italy, Japan's allies, declared war on the U.S.

President Roosevelt declaring war on Japan

Due to the attack, the U.S. joined WWII to retaliate against Japan. When the attacks were over Japan claimed more land in parts of Asia and the Pacific. Then, in June of 1942, America got the victory against Japan at the island of Midway and decided they wanted to be done fighting with Japan. The fighting ended in May 1945 when Germany surrendered and a few months later on August 6, Harry Truman, the new President of the United States, ordered an atomic bomb to be dropped on Japan. It landed on Hiroshima, a city in Japan and another was dropped on Nagasaki, three days later. This killed thousands of unexpecting civilians and destroyed neighborhoods within seconds. Six days after the second bombing, Japan surrendered and World War ll ended.
